Attack in Afghanistan in Helmand Provence

France utterly condemns yesterday’s terrorist attack in Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan, which killed 21 Afghan civilians and injured six others.

With this new attack, the extremists are once again proving they care nothing for human life and that their only goal is to terrorize the Afghan people.

In the run-up to the presidential and provincial elections, so important for bolstering democracy in Afghanistan, France reiterates its desire for the Afghan people to be able to vote freely and democratically.

France extends its condolences to the bereaved and to the Afghan people and authorities, whom it assures of its solidarity and determination to remain committed at their side to contributing to Afghanistan’s stabilization and reconstruction.

Madagascar

France welcomes and supports former Mozambique president Joaquim Chissano’s efforts to promote the resumption of a dialogue between the four Malagasy parties, with the contribution of the International Contact Group mediators.

Together with the whole international community, we are keen for the discussions begun in Maputo on August 5 to help bring an end to the crisis, in particular through the consensual adoption of the proposed “Transition Charter” and electoral timetable, so that Madagascar can see a return to a calm political climate.

Sinking of the “Princess Ashika” ferry / Tonga

We were extremely shocked to learn of the sinking of the “Princess Ashika” ferry yesterday off the Tongan coast near Nuku’alofa, the capital of Tonga, which killed several people, with around 30 others reported missing.

In these tragic circumstances, France extends its sincere condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones. It expresses its sympathy and solidarity to the Tongan people and authorities.

France / Middle East

Can you confirm that President Sarkozy has intervened to obtain the release of the French-Palestinian Salah Hamouri, who is being detained in Israel?

The President of the Republic did indeed write to the Israeli Prime Minister to draw his attention to the situation of Salah Hamouri and to ask the Israeli judicial authorities to provide some degree of clemency.

As you know, the French authorities have provided constant support for our compatriot since his incarceration. Denise Hamouri, Salah’s mother, was received by Bernard Kouchner and by the ambassador in charge of human rights, François Zimeray. Denise Hamouri was also invited to the Elysée on June 25.

Furthermore, the Consulate followed all of the court proceedings and attended all the hearings during the trial. Consular employees continue to visit Salah Hamouri regularly./.
