Iran/ Nuclear

What format do you want the October 1st meeting of the Six to take? What will be the level of the experts? Will it involve political directors or foreign affairs ministers? Where will this meeting take place? On Friday you asked for a meeting “ahead of” the UN General Assembly. The date of October 1 does not correspond to your request; what is your reaction? Is the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Six envisaged by Bernard Kouchner on the sidelines of the UN Assembly still due to take place?

Javier Solana confirmed that the meeting with Iran will take place on October 1. It will bring together the political directors.

We thought that it would be better for this meeting to take place ahead of the UN General Assembly. Due to agenda constraints that has proved impossible.

The important thing for us is that this meeting should take place as soon as possible.

The Foreign Affairs Ministers of the “E3+3” will meet to discuss this in New York next week.

Fight against terrorism

What is your reaction to bin Laden’s most recent message? Do you think, like the experts, that the head of Al Qaeda has become weak and that he is looking for a way out?

We have just commemorated the 8th anniversary of the September 11 attacks and France reaffirms its determination to fight against terrorism with all of its partners in the international community.

Middle East

A group linked to the Al Qaeda terrorist network, the “Abdullah Azzam Brigades,” claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks from south Lebanon against Israel in a communiqué published online this morning on an Islamist website. This is the 3rd incident of this type this year. Israel announced on Saturday that it had made a complaint to the UN following the firing of these rockets and blamed the Lebanese government. What is your reaction? Who do you think is responsible - the Lebanese army (and the government) or UNIFIL?

France condemns last Friday’s rocket attacks against northern Israel from south Lebanon. These attacks constitute a violation of resolution 1701.

Like the UN Secretary-General, France invites the parties to facilitate the work of UNIFIL, which has launched, together with the Lebanese forces, an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. It also urges them to fully respect the Blue Line and the cessation of hostilities.

Everything must be done to avoid a new escalation of violence which may threaten stability in the region.
