Mali – Violence in Kidal (May 17, 2014)

France condemns the unacceptable and deadly violence that took place on May 17 during the Malian prime minister’s visit to Kidal. There is no excuse for such acts, while every effort must be made to promote dialogue and reconciliation, in accordance with the UN Security Council decisions.

Full light must be shed on the crimes perpetrated against civilians and representatives of the Malian government and those responsible must be identified and brought to justice.

We demand that the armed groups immediately and unconditionally release those being held hostage and restore the governorate of Kidal.

The French forces present in Mali lent their support to the UN mission (MINUSMA) in order to ensure the security of the Malian prime minister’s visit. Furthermore, they remain engaged in the fight against armed terrorist groups in northern Mali. Significant results have been achieved in recent weeks.

What’s your response to the events that took place at the weekend in Kidal? Almost a year after Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s election, the Malian state has no control over this area in the north. Why is this happening? The lack of a policy of dialogue and reconciliation, the return of jihadists to the area? In addition, France, which has a military presence in Kidal, is being accused in Mali of being passive, or indeed complacent, with respect to the MNLA rebels. What’s your response?

Please refer to the statement that I’ve just made.

With respect to your last question, France supports the democratically elected authorities and is attached to the sovereignty of Mali.

Colombia – Peace negotiations

France welcomes the announcement of an agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC during the third stage of the negotiations, which focused on drug trafficking. This is a key milestone in the peace process initiated in Havana in November 2012.

In accordance with the agenda, there are two outstanding issues: the ceasefire and justice for the victims.

On this occasion, France reaffirms is resolute and constant support for the peace process in its entirety.

Colombia – Bus accident (May 18, 2014)
