Mali – Renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) (New York, June 25, 2014)

France welcomes the unanimous adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2164.

This resolution renews the mandate of the UN force in Mali (MINUSMA) for one year.

It notably specifies two priorities for action:

- the strengthening of MINUSMA’s presence in northern Mali so that it can fully implement its mandate to protect civilians;

- the strengthening of MINUSMA’s action at the political level: the resolution therefore calls on the UN secretary-general’s special representative to support the immediate launch of inclusive peace talks, in coordination with the parties and the regional and international actors.

Resolution 2164 also reaffirms the importance of the peace process based on the Ouagadougou Agreement and the ceasefire agreement of May 23 and underscores the efforts of Algeria and Burkina Faso in their role as ECOWAS mediators.

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture (June 26, 2014)

On this International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, France reaffirms its commitment to the fight against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Thirty years after the entry into force of the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, many states continue to practice or give free rein to torture.

France encourages all states to ratify this text and its optional protocol.

It is more mobilized than ever to put an end to the impunity of the perpetrators of these crimes.

Nigeria – Attack (Abuja, June 25, 2014)

France condemns the attack that caused dozens of casualties in a shopping mall in Abuja yesterday.

We extend our condolences to the families and assure the Nigerian authorities and people of our solidarity.

At this difficult time, France reaffirms its support for Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.

Lebanon – Attack in Raouche (Beirut, June 24, 2014)

France condemns the attack that rocked Beirut yesterday.

It expresses its solidarity with the members of the security forces who were injured while trying to intervene, as well with their families.

The perpetrators of this terrorist act must be prosecuted and convicted.

We denounce all attempts to compromise Lebanon’s stability and reaffirm our support for the country’s authorities and institutions, notably those responsible for security that are striving to safeguard Lebanon’s unity and stability.
