France welcomes yesterday's decision by the Supreme Court of Connecticut declaring the death penalty unconstitutional, including for convicts currently on death row.

This decision upholds the abolition of the death penalty instituted by that state in 2012. To date, 19 American states have abolished the death penalty.

France is opposed to the death penalty in all places and circumstances.
