Bahrain – Further detention of Sheikh Ali Salman, Secretary General of al-Wefaq (January 7, 2015)

France is closely monitoring the situation of the secretary general of the political association al-Wefaq.

It is concerned that his detention has been extended and reaffirms its attachment to the freedom of opinion and the freedom of expression, as well as respect for the rights of the defense.

The resumption of broad political dialogue, which will bring together all components of Bahraini society, is more necessary than ever in order to help ease tensions and promote national reconciliation.

We extend our condolences to the victim’s family as well as to the Malian authorities.

Through Operation Barkhane, France remains resolutely committed alongside the Malian authorities in the fight against terrorism.

Development – Ms. Annick Girardin and Mr. Matthias Fekl’s participation in the French Development Agency network conferences (Paris, January 7, 2015)

Ms. Annick Girardin, Minister of State for Development and Francophony, and Mr. Matthias Fekl, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, the Promotion of Tourism and French Nationals Abroad, yesterday represented Mr. Laurent Fabius at the French Development Agency network conferences.

The French Development Agency finances projects in more than 90 countries. Thanks to the efforts of its 70 agencies and 1,800 employees, AFD commitments reached a record level of €8 billion in 2014.

Ms. Girardin and Mr. Fekl notably encouraged the agency to continue its efforts with respect to sustainable development. They reaffirmed the three priorities for 2015: the fight against climate disruption and preparations for the 2015 Paris Climate Conference; support for fragile states in order to help them respond to crises and prevent conflicts; the agency’s contribution to economic diplomacy and the promotion of corporate social and environmental responsibility.
