Côte d’Ivoire/France/UN

Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, April 11, 2011

Over the past few days, heavy weapons attacks and violence have continued to target civilians, UN personnel and foreign diplomatic missions in several districts of Abidjan and its suburbs. The humanitarian situation in these districts is alarming.

Yesterday the Golf Hotel, sheltering President Alassane Ouattara and placed under UN protection, suffered a direct attack from M. Laurent Gbagbo’s forces.

In accordance with UNSCR 1975 and in agreement with President Ouattara, the United Nations Secretary-General asked President Sarkozy for the French forces to continue participating in UNOCI-led operations to neutralize the heavy weapons used against civilians.

President Sarkozy agreed to the Secretary-General’s request. He encouraged the UN to do everything to enable people’s security and basic services in Abidjan and its suburbs to be swiftly restored.

France reiterates her condemnation of all the violence against civilians and against the Blue Helmets throughout Ivorian territory. She firmly supports President Ouattara’s intention to institute proceedings, in the national and international courts, against the perpetrators of such acts of violence./.
