Afghanistan – Death of a French soldier

President Sarkozy was very shocked to learn this afternoon of the death of a lance-corporal from the 2nd Marine Infantry Regiment in Afghanistan. During an operation in Kapisa his armoured vehicle was hit by an exploding improvised explosive device.

Nine other marines were also wounded in the attack.

President Sarkozy extends his most sincere condolences to the family and close friends of the soldier killed in action and shares their grief.
He wishes the wounded soldiers the speediest recovery and assures them and their families of his deepest sympathy in this painful ordeal.

The Head of State reaffirms his support for the Afghan people and authorities. He expresses France’s determination to go on working within the International Security Assistance Force. This UN-mandated force has been assigned the mission of contributing to the re-establishment of stability, restoration of peace and to development in Afghanistan./.
