Paris, September 9, 2014
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development had a meeting this afternoon with the Chairman of the fact-finding and evaluation mission on Sunday working, set up in June 2014 within the Paris Council.
Building on the momentum generated at the recent Tourism Conference, Laurent Fabius reiterated his support for permission to open on Sundays to be extended to the Boulevard Haussmann area, with concerted financial compensation mechanisms for the employees concerned.
Tourism is a strategic sector for the French economy: it accounts for over two million direct and indirect jobs, a surplus of over €10 billion in our trade balance and is worth more than 7% of GDP. It is therefore essential to strengthen this sector and France’s position as world leader in tourism, in a context where other countries’ tourism offers are increasingly competitive./.
