Communiqué issued by the Presidency of the Republic
Paris, December 9, 2014

The French President is happy to announce the release of Serge Lazarevic, kidnapped in Hombori, Mali, on 24 November 2011 and held hostage in the Sahel for more than three years.

Serge Lazarevic is to travel to Niamey, then France. He is in relatively good health, despite the very tough conditions of his lengthy captivity. He will be quickly repatriated to France.

The Head of State thanks the Nigerien and Malian authorities, which worked for this happy outcome, and particularly President Issoufou and President Keita, to whose personal commitment he pays tribute.

The French President shares the joy of our compatriot’s family, who endured the anguish of this ordeal, as they recounted each time he met them.

The President once again honours the memory of Philippe Verdon, who was abducted along with Serge Lazarevic and murdered by his kidnappers./.
