Communiqué issued by the office of M. Harlem Désir, Minister of State for European Affairs
Brussels, May 18, 2015

M. Harlem Désir, the Minister of State for European Affairs, welcomes today’s adoption by the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council of the decision to establish the European naval military operation EUNAVFOR MED, aimed at combating people traffickers in the Mediterranean.

Less than a month after the extraordinary European Council meeting of 23 April, the swift adoption of this decision is the first step towards the launch – in addition to Frontex’s border surveillance and sea rescue operations – of a European naval operation that will enable us to inspect and neutralize the vessels used by the traffickers. Meanwhile, the European states which are members of the United Nations Security Council are committed to securing the adoption of a Security Council resolution in support of EUNAVFOR MED.

This operation is an important element of the response the EU is making to end the tragedy of migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean./.
