Leaders hold new talks on Ukraine peace efforts

Published on May 25, 2016
On May 24, President Hollande and Chancellor Merkel spoke to President Putin and President Poroshenko in a "Normandy format" telephone call.

The three presidents and the Chancellor recalled their commitment to the Minsk agreements and their determination to do everything to ensure they are fully implemented as quickly as possible.

They emphasized the importance of implementing all the measures necessary to consolidate the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, beginning with the withdrawal of weapons, planning for the disengagement of forces, and the release of prisoners.

They also reviewed the work done on the various political issues, which should, in particular, lead to local elections being held in Donbass in accordance with Ukrainian law and according to OSCE standards.

STATEMENT BY M. JEAN MARC AYRAULT, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

I welcome the release on Wednesday of Nadya Savchenko and several other prisoners. Over the last few months, Frances has tirelessly urged Russian officials to release these prisoners and, more broadly, to exchange all prisoners in accordance with the “all for all” principle, agreed upon in Minsk on February 12, 2015.

France, alongside Germany, will continue its efforts to implement the Package of Measures on the Minsk agreements.
