Students from around the country gather to debate on the balance between liberty and security.

The Lafayette Debates, organized each year by the Embassy of France in the United States in partnership with George Washington University, will return to Washington, D.C. on April 16 and 17. In this fourth edition, students from America’s most prestigious universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Yale, George Washington and Georgetown will debate on the balance between liberty and security in democratic societies.

Since its launch in 2013, the Lafayette Debates have invited more than 300 students from 150 universities to compete in debates on transatlantic topics. This year, for the first time, Canadian students will join the competition as well. Also competing in their own championship will be students from military academies, including the École de guerre française (French War College).

The final rounds will take place on Sunday, April 17 at the Embassy of France. Winning teams and the three best debaters will win the grand prize of a paid study abroad program in France next June.
