The second annual "à la carte" festival, a celebration of contemporary French food, wine and art of living, designed to excite and inspire food lovers of all ages, will take place in Chicago from October 19 to 30, 2016.

For a whole week, guests will experience new and classic foods, pastries, and beverages all while discovering the many flavors of France! From October 19 to 30, 2016, everyone is invited to celebrate the French table.

This week-long event includes specially crafted menus at restaurants, cooking workshops, tastings, a recipe contest via social media, and activities for children and families...

Launch Party for à la carte Chicago 2016

Get an exclusive first look at the second annual French Food Festival taking place in Chicago and throughout the Midwest. "My Favorite French Dish or Pastry" contest for K-12 students (Deadline Oct. 16)

As part of the à la carte festival, the Cultural Services at the Consulate General of France in Chicago and the American Association of Teachers of French (Chicago – North Illinois Chapter) are organizing a drawing, writing and video contest around the theme "My Favorite French Dish or Pastry". Enter for a chance to win a French Treats Basket, French books, CDs and DVDs! "My Favorite French Dish or Pastry" contest is open to all K-12 students from Chicago and the surrounding area. Write a short essay or poetry, draw a drawing, shoot a short video about what you like the most in French cuisine.
The best works will be published on the “à la carte” website and the winners will receive their awards from the Consul General of France in Chicago during the closing ceremony of “à la carte” on October 30 at the Gene Siskel Film Center.

Jean-Claude Boisset Wine Dinner

Neil has worked in the wine and spirits industry since 1996 and has been the USA Export Director for The Boisset Family since 2009. He is passionate about Burgundy where he lived for 23 years and its regional wines. He has come to understand the complexity of its « terroirs », the annual trials and tribulations of its growers and winemakers, but most of all to appreciate the wonderful diversity of its wines; legendary chardonnays and pinot noirs from the most complex yet astounding collection of Vineyards on earth.

Oyster tasting and wine pairing

Join us Wednesday, October 19th, from 5:30 to 7:00pm as we embark upon hosting an oyster and wine education and event from the perspective of the Mecca of haute-cuisine, France. Founding Partners of Shaw’s, Steve LaHaie, will give one of his wonderful and passionate talks about oysters with more in-depth focus on the relationship that France has had with this wonderful bivalve.
Wine Director Jim Haupt will take us through three different pairings, all from France to show the versatility of oyster and wine as a great way to begin a meal. $45 per person (plus tax and gratuity) Ten oysters (2 each of the 5 oyster species) Belons, Olympias, Kumamotos, Shigoku, Island Creek, French wine pairing.

Cooking Demo with Madelaine Bullwinkel

We are excited to kick-off à la carte Chicago with a hands-on cooking class with Madelaine Bullwinkel, featuring a dinner harvest from Provence. The flavors of olives, basil, walnuts and Rhone wine infuse this casual menu with the allure of Provence. Class members will experience the pleasures of the harvest as they prepare Grilled Goat Cheese in Grape Leaves, Spiced Olives, Fall Vegetable Soup with Pistou, Daube à l’Ancienne (Beef Shalots, Olives) and Walnut Cake with Chocolate Sauce. It’s a hearty fall meal that will taste wonderful throughout the cold weather months.
Chef Madelaine Bullwinkel, has been teaching French cooking skills in hands-on classes for almost 40 years and is the resident chef at Alliance Française de Chicago. She brings a wealth of experience to the classroom and has guided culinary tours for 20 years in Paris, the Limousin and Provence. In 2001, the Chicago Tribune honored her with the Good Eating Award.

Lyon Lecture with Pascale Remy

Everybody knows you get a better meal in Lyon than in Paris... now is time to discover why! A previous director of the Alliance Française de Chicago now residing in Lyon, Pascale will tell the story of how Lyon has become the Capital of Gastronomy, from "le bouchon" to "la mère Brazier" and will also, of course, recount the international success of Bocuse and the "Cité de la Gastronomie". Followed by a sampling of Lyon delicacies provided by Chef Biggers from the Sofitel’s Café des Architectes:

Lyon Gastronomic Dinner

For the second annual festival “à la carte” a celebration of contemporary French food, celebrating the French Capital of Gastronomy Lyon was an easy choice for Café des Architectes’ Executive Chef Greg Biggers. Not only because Chef Greg Biggers has studied in Lyon at l’Institut Paul Bocuse but because Lyon holds some of the richest gastronomical history of anywhere in the world.
Lyon is surrounded by some of the finest raw materials in France, has been home to many top chefs including the “Pope of French Cuisine” Paul Bocuse, and maintains its rich culinary traditions with over 2,000 restaurants.

At a very special dinner on Wednesday, October 26, guests will enjoy an extended prix fixe dinner featuring classic Lyon cuisine, Lyon inspired wine pairings, and an intriguing open discussion about the rich history of food from this region. The discussion will be led by Lyon’s Pascale Remy and Chef Greg Biggers.

Shadow a Chef with Dominique Tougne

Have you ever wondered about the daily life of a chef? Follow Chef Dominique from Chez Moi throughout the day and experience the life of a master at work! The day starts with breakfast at La Fournette followed by a check-in at Chez Moi before the weekend brunch. Then, guests will travel with Chef Dominique to La Voûte Bistro & Bar in Homewood. The group will accompany him while he shops for ingredients and spend time with him in the kitchen. Lunch will be served at La Voûte. Guests will return to Chez Moi for dinner. Follow servers, hosts, bartenders, and cooks.

Entre les Bras Film

In Entre les Bras, the management of one of France’s finest restaurants passes from father to son, but the tradition of innovative cuisine continues. This documentary, directed by Paul Lacoste, is a drama of generations, seasons, and always, beautiful cuisine.

Special screening "Kings of Pastry" with Chef Jacquy Pfeiffer in person!

The Olympics are relatively tension-free compared to the high-stakes competition for the culinary world’s ultimate accolade for the pastry chef: the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (Best Craftsman in France), awarded by the president of France every four years. Filmmakers Hegedus and Pennebaker follow Jacquy Pfeiffer, co-founder of Chicago’s renowned French Pastry School, in pursuit of sweet victory as he and fifteen other world class pâtissiers plunge into the harrowing action of a three-day marathon in which careers rise and fall on the delicate strands of towering sugar sculptures.
Chef Jacquy Pfeiffer will be present for audience discussion.
A free raffle and tasting event with specialties of the French Pastry School follows in the Gallery/Café (ticket stub required for entry). The winners of the 2016 à la carte Raffle will also be announced during the reception.

Passport to France 2016

Passport to France is a celebration of French-inspired restaurants, foods, products, wines, spirits, entertainment and more! Passport to France is the largest fundraiser organized by FACC-Chicago.
For decades, this annual soirée has been planned the third Thursday of November. It began as a celebration of the Beaujolais Nouveau vintage and has since grown into a celebration of fine gastronomy, French Chefs, wines and spirits, culture and entertainment. Nearly 1,000 of Chicago’s Francophiles gather for live entertainment, our silent auction and the chance to experience the finest cuisine and wine in this toast to France.
