Inclusion of French properties on UNESCO's World Heritage List

In agreement with the minister of ecology, sustainable development and energy as well as with the minister of culture and communication, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked our permanent delegation to UNESCO to submit an application for the inclusion of Chauvet Cave and the Chaîne des Puys-Faille de Limagne on the World Heritage List with a view toward the adoption of a decision by the World Heritage Committee in 2014.

This is consistent with the opinion delivered by the National Committee for French World Heritage Properties.

38 French properties are currently included on the World Heritage List.

The member states are now required to submit the application for the inclusion of a cultural property (which is the case for Chauvet Cave) and a mixed or natural property (the category of the Chaîne des Puys-Faille de Limagne).

Tunisia – Fires at two mausoleums

France expresses its deep concern at the increased number of fires at mausoleums in Tunisia.

We reaffirm our attachment to the freedom of religion and belief.

We urge the Tunisian authorities to do everything possible to put an end to these violent acts and to protect Tunisia’s spiritual, cultural and architectural heritage.

Saudi Arabia – Execution of Mohammed Omar Khan

France condemns the beheading on January 23 in Saudi Arabia of Afghan citizen Mohammed Omar Khan. France again expresses its grave concern at the rate of executions in Saudi Arabia. This is the 6th person to be executed in 2 weeks.

France is campaigning for the universal abolition of the death penalty and intends to be at the forefront of this struggle. As Mr. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed, France expresses its firm and constant opposition to the death penalty everywhere and under all circumstances. It again urges Saudi Arabia to put an end to the executions and to establish a moratorium.
