Meeting between Mr. Pascal Canfin and Ms. Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program (April 22, 2013)

On April 22, Mr. Pascal Canfin, Minister Delegate for Development, received Ms. Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Program, who was on an official visit to Paris.

The minister delegate discussed the humanitarian situation in Mali and in the Sahel region with Ms. Cousin. The discussions notably focused on food security assistance for the populations in the liberated areas of northern Mali, as well as on the Malians who have taken refuge in neighboring countries.

Mr. Canfin and Ms. Cousin agreed to strengthen strategic dialogue between France and the World Food Program. They also underscored the importance of giving specific attention to food security concerns in the development agenda, which is meant to replace the Millennium Development Goals after 2015.

The World Food Program is the largest humanitarian agency within the United Nations system. In 2012, it brought help to almost 100 million people in 75 countries. It is France’s preferred operator with respect to its food assistance. Approximately half of French food assistance should therefore be delivered through this agency to the Sahel and to the Syrian refugees in 2013.

Election of Mr. Horacio Cartes as president of the Republic of Paraguay

France congratulates Mr. Cartes and wishes him every success in his new role.

Syria – Massacres in Jdeidet al-Fadel

France utterly condemns the massacre of civilians in the neighborhood of Jdeidet al-Fadel on the outskirts of Damascus.

This heinous act again demonstrates the brutality of Bashar al-Assad’s regime which doesn’t hesitate to massacre civilians in order to remain in power.

These crimes must not go unpunished and those responsible must be held accountable before international criminal courts.

The abuses against the civilian populations are unacceptable and must stop.
