Statements made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson (Paris, May 2, 2013)

Libya

France strongly condemns the besieging by militiamen of the various Libyan ministries. Such unacceptable acts impede the proper functioning of the government authorities. These repeated incidents underline the urgent need to re-establish security in Libya.

The French authorities urge all Libyans to rally around the transitional government and the General National Congress, the only legitimate authorities to emerge from the elections on July 7, 2012.

As we reaffirmed following the attack perpetrated against our embassy in Tripoli last week, France plans to remain mobilized alongside Libya. It reaffirms its full support for the transition process under way and for the establishment of a state based on the rule of law and democratic institutions that respect freedoms, in accordance with the aspirations of the Libyan people.

It encourages all Libyans to rebuild a society based on national unity that respects the values of tolerance, dignity and peace. In particular, it urges them to mobilize all efforts to swiftly adopt a constitution.
