Festival of Europe: focus on youth/ Debate with young French people on the future of Europe – Communiqué issued by Mr. Thierry Repentin

Mr. Thierry Repentin, Minister Delegate for European Affairs, wanted the Festival of Europe to focus on youth, a priority for President Hollande. On the occasion of the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, he will meet, on May 9, with the representatives of the European Youth Parliament as well as French lycée students who participated in a European election campaign simulation. It will provide an opportunity to highlight the European initiatives promoted by France aimed at responding to youth concerns.

Mr. Repentin will attend a presentation of the “Eurolycées” project organized by the “Association Civisme et Démocratie” (Citizenship and Democracy Association) at the European Parliament Information Office in France alongside European deputies. On this occasion, the minister delegate will exchange views with the lycée students on Europe. The “Eurolycées” project allowed lycée students to develop ideas and recommendations on the EU’s energy and environmental future during European election campaign simulations.

At 3:00 pm at the Maison de l'Europe in Paris, Mr. Repentin will exchange views with members of the European Youth Parliament. Some of the areas that this Parliament has worked on include citizenship, youth employment, housing, agriculture, energy policy and economic recovery.

Mr. Repentin will also meet with associations working to promote the “European Year of Citizens” and with visitors to the European Village on the square in front of Paris City Hall, as part of the inauguration of the “Faites l'Europe” program.

Lastly, at 5:30 pm he will respond to questions from monde.fr readers during an online debate.

Somalia – Visit to London by Mr. Pascal Canfin (May 7, 2013)

Mr. Pascal Canfin, Minister Delegate for Development, will participate in the Somalia Conference in London today.

This conference aims to strengthen the partnership between the Somali authorities and the international community in order to support the stabilization process under way. It will be co-chaired by British Prime Minister David Cameron and Somali President Hassan Sheik Mohamud.

It will provide an opportunity to discuss the main challenges associated with the current situation in Somalia, notably security, justice, public finances and the fight against sexual violence. It will provide fresh impetus to the effective coordination of international efforts to advance governance in Somalia. Strengthening the rule of law and ensuring that the populations have better access to justice are key to promoting the fundamental rights of the Somali people.

France and the EU are mobilized to help Somalia. The efforts of the European Union are essential, especially with respect to security. The EU deploys 3 missions within the framework of its Common Security and Defense Policy: Operation Atalanta, EUCAP NESTOR and EUTM Somalia. It has provided financial support to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) since its creation in 2007.
