Sudan – Attack against the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur

France strongly condemns the attack against a patrol belonging to the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) which killed 7 Tanzanian soldiers and injured 17 others on July 13.

We express our condolences to the Tanzanian authorities as well as to the victims’ families.

France is concerned by the deteriorating security situation in Darfur and urges the Sudanese government to swiftly investigate this attack and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

We reaffirm our full support for UNAMID’s action and for the states that are helping to consolidate peace in Darfur. Only a political solution can put an end to the cycle of violence. France calls on all actors to join the Doha process and encourages the Sudanese authorities to continue honoring its commitments to development in Darfur.

Bolivia

The Mercosur member countries have decided to recall their ambassadors to France, Italy, Spain and Portugal for consultations in order to protest against the closing of airspace to the Bolivian presidential plane. What is France’s response to this decision?

With respect to the incident relating to the authorization for the plane carrying the Bolivian president to fly over its territory, France provided the Bolivian authorities with the necessary explanations and had the opportunity to directly express its regrets.

France reaffirms its determination to overcome the misunderstandings that may have resulted from this situation and its desire to continue dialogue and cooperation, both with Bolivia and the members of Mercosur, in the spirit of respect and trust that should, in our view, characterize relations with these countries.
