Burma – Signing of the additional protocol to the safeguards agreement with the IAEA (September 17, 2013)

France welcomes the signing on September 17 by Burma of an additional protocol to its safeguards agreement with the IAEA. The signing of this protocol supports the positive reform process under way in the country which France encourages.

This text is a legal instrument that is key to allowing the IAEA to fulfil its verification mission regarding the nuclear non-proliferation commitments. 121 states have signed an additional protocol. We are pleased to note this increase and urge the states that have not yet done so to ratify such a protocol as swiftly as possible.

France supports the IAEA’s action and reaffirms its attachment to the principles of universality and strengthened safeguards.

Guinea – Agreement on the date of the parliamentary elections

The committee that is monitoring the organization of the parliamentary elections has decided by consensus to delay the elections in Guinea until September 28.

France commends the role of the facilitator, Mr. Said Djinnit, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa, as well as the spirit of consensus that has prevailed. We call on all political actors to continue to work to ensure that the parliamentary elections will allow Guinea to complete its democratic transition process.

We call on all parties to demonstrate a spirit of responsibility during the last few days of the campaign.
