Tunisia - Failed attack in Sousse and thwarted attack in Monastir (October 30)

Following the failed attack in Sousse and the thwarted attack in Monastir yesterday morning, France reiterates its condemnation of all forms of terrorism. We are closely monitoring the security situation in Tunisia.

We express our solidarity with the Tunisian people and authorities, while a process of national dialogue is under way, which we hope will soon lead to the finalization of the draft Constitution and the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections.

In the current context, it is more necessary than ever for all Tunisian political forces to demonstrate a spirit of responsibility in order to reach a compromise aimed at resolving the crisis.

Peace process – Settlement activity

France fully supports the continuation of the negotiations under way and all gestures that could contribute to their success. In this respect, it welcomes the courageous decision by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to release 26 Palestinian prisoners, in accordance with the commitments made when the negotiations resumed.

France, which calls on the parties to refrain from any gesture that could undermine the peace process, condemns the Israeli authorities’ approval of the construction of new homes in the West Bank settlements, including East Jerusalem.

It reaffirms that settlement activity is illegal under international law, constitutes an obstacle to a just peace based on the two-state solution and fuels tensions on the ground.

Iran

The Iranian minister of foreign affairs will be in Paris next week ahead of the Geneva discussions. Can you tell us if and when he will meet with Laurent Fabius?

The minister will receive his Iranian counterpart on November 5 on the occasion of his visit to Paris within the framework of the UNESCO General Conference.
