Somalia – Attack in Beledweyne (November 19, 2013)

France condemns the attack perpetrated in Somalia on November 19, 2013, against a police station in the town of Beledweyne.

It extends its condolences to the victims’ families and the Federal Government of Somalia.

We pay tribute to the efforts of the Somali police force and army, as well as the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), to restore peace and security. France supports the Federal Government of Somalia, the African Union and the UN in this effort.

Syria – Statement by the Syrian National Coalition’s interim government on human rights

France welcomes the statement adopted on November 19 by the Syrian National Coalition’s interim government in which it reaffirms its attachment to human rights and its commitment to upholding the international agreements and pacts in this area.

This commitment is essential to building the Syria of tomorrow that will respect the rule of law. France reaffirms its full support for the coalition, the only legitimate representative of the Syrian people as well as for its interim government.

This statement comes at a time when the UN General Assembly has just, once again, – through a resolution adopted yesterday by a large majority – condemned the violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in Syria, for which Bashar al-Assad’s regime is primarily responsible.

International Criminal Court – 12th Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute (The Hague, November 20 to 28, 2013)

France will participate from today in the 12th Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which will take place in The Hague from November 20 to 28.

France, which actively contributed to the creation of the court, reaffirms on this occasion its attachment to the role and missions of this institution, as well as the fight against impunity throughout the world.

Our support for the court is notably expressed:

- politically, through our support for the court and its mandate in all multilateral forums, with the objective of ensuring the universalization of the Rome Statute;

- financially, through the allocation of almost €100 million since the creation of the court. France therefore became the 3rd largest contributor to its budget in 2013;
- in terms of expertise, thanks to judicial cooperation and continuous exchanges with the different organs of the court.
