Democratic Republic of Congo – Awarding of the Fondation Chirac Prize to Dr. Denis Mukwege (Paris, November 21, 2013)

Ms. Yamina Benguigui, Minister Delegate for Francophonie, will today take part in the ceremony for the award of the Fondation Chirac Prize for Conflict Prevention, in the presence of President Hollande and Mr. Jacques Chirac. This prize will be awarded to Dr. Denis Mukwege for his action in support of women who have suffered sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On this occasion, Ms. Benguigui will also meet with the members of the “Femmes Africa Solidarité” organization, which will receive the Fondation Chirac Special Jury Prize for its efforts to promote the role of women in conflict prevention.

 

Maldives – Presidential elections

France welcomes the holding of the second round of the presidential elections in the Maldives and the election of Mr. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. France commends the very high voter turnout. The people of the Maldives have, despite the difficulties and obstacles, successfully demonstrated their determination to elect their president.

France calls on the government and the political parties to overcome the difficulties of the past few weeks and to work together in the interests of the Maldivian people.
