DRC – Attack against civilians in the eastern part of the country (December 13 and 14, 2013)

France condemns the deadly attack carried out on December 13 and 14 in the eastern part of the DRC against the civilian populations, including, in particular, children.

We call for the opening of an investigation as swiftly as possible in order to identify the perpetrators of these heinous crimes, which must not go unpunished.

France reaffirms its support for MONUSCO in order to neutralize the armed groups still operating in the eastern part of the DRC, notably the Ugandan rebel group ADF-NALU in the Beni area.

South Sudan

France is extremely concerned at the fighting that has broken out in Juba, in South Sudan, causing dozens of casualties.

It calls on the parties to the conflict to demonstrate the utmost restraint and to seek a peaceful solution.

In cooperation with the other missions from EU countries, the Embassy of France in South Sudan has set up a crisis unit. It is keeping the French community fully informed of the latest developments and the safety precautions to be observed.

There are 160 French citizens, of whom 114 are registered at the embassy. Most of them live in Juba and work for non-governmental organizations. There are approximately 430 European citizens in Juba.

Iraq – Attacks

France condemns the deadly attacks perpetrated yesterday in Iraq.

It extends its condolences to the Iraqi people and to the victims’ families. We reaffirm our support for the Iraqi authorities and people in their fight against terrorism.

Now more than ever, France calls on all Iraqis to work together to put an end to the violence.
