Statements made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson (Paris, January 27, 2014)

South Sudan – Signing of a ceasefire agreement (January 23, 2014)

France welcomes the signing of a ceasefire agreement in South Sudan, made possible thanks to the mediation efforts of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the support of the African Union.

France calls on the parties to immediately implement this agreement in full and to guarantee humanitarian access to the civilian populations. The parties must embark on a national reconciliation process in order to allow South Sudan to overcome its divisions and ensure that this violence does not recur.

We condemn all mass violations of human rights committed in South Sudan, and support the African Union’s decision to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate these crimes. Perpetrators of atrocities and human rights violations must be held accountable.

France reaffirms its support for the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) which is engaged in essential efforts to provide humanitarian assistance and protect civilians and human rights. UNMISS must be able to fulfill its mandate without hindrance and without compromising the safety of mission personnel.
