Nepal – Formation of a new government (February 25, 2014)

France welcomes the formation on February 25 of the Nepalese government by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala.
The formation of the government, following the election of the Constituent Assembly, is another important milestone in the political transition and economic and social development in Nepal.

Ukraine

Tensions are increasing in Crimea where the Russian flag has been raised at the government headquarters. What is France’s reaction to the latest events and the Russian statements this morning? Are there any diplomatic initiatives to calm the situation, for example discussions between the 5 permanent members of the Security Council?

As Mr. Laurent Fabius has indicated on several occasions, France is very attached to the unity of Ukraine.
The changing situation in Crimea is troubling and we call for efforts to ease tensions.

The French authorities are in continuous contact with the Russian and Ukrainian authorities as well as with their European Union partners.

North Korea - Japan

According to the Japanese Red Cross, government officials from Japan and North Korea are expected to meet in China on March 3 on the sidelines of the meetings between the Red Cross associations of Japan and North Korea for the first time since November 2012. Do you have any response?

A communiqué issued by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs today confirmed that the Foreign Affairs Ministries of Japan and North Korea would be involved in the meeting on March 3 between the Red Cross associations of both countries.

There are no details regarding consultations between government officials on the sidelines of this meeting. Please refer to this communiqué.

In general, dialogue is key to promoting regional peace and security.

We stand in solidarity with the Japanese people with respect to the abduction issue. We regularly raise this issue during our exchanges with the North Korean authorities.
