Summit of the Association of Caribbean States (Mérida, Mexico, April 28 to 30, 2014)

The 6th Summit of the Association of Caribbean States is taking place from April 28 to 30 in Mérida, Mexico. It marks the 20th anniversary of this regional organization of which France has been an associate member since it was established in 1994.

Ms. George Pau-Langevin, Minister for Overseas France, will represent President Hollande at this summit; the regions of Guadeloupe and Martinique will also participate in the summit for the first time as full associate members. Indeed, they became members in their own right of the Association of Caribbean States in recent weeks, with the support of the government. The regional integration of the French departments of the Americas is one of our priorities.

France condemns the execution of Clayton Lockett yesterday in the state of Oklahoma. It urges the Oklahoma authorities to establish a moratorium with a view toward abolishing this punishment, as many states in the United States have done.

France reaffirms its opposition to the use of the death penalty everywhere.
