During her visit, Ms. Annick Girardin will also meet with Mr. Juan Manuel Gomez Robledo, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, and Mr. Guerra Abud, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, in order to discuss bilateral cooperation in preparation for the 2015 Paris Climate Conference and with respect to green and inclusive growth. Nuclear-weapon-free zones – Signing by France of the protocol to the Semipalatinsk Treaty (May 6, 2014)

France signed, on May 6 in New York, together with the four other nuclear weapon states, the protocol to the treaty establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central Asia. By signing this protocol, it made the commitment not to use nuclear weapons, nor to threaten to do so, against 5 countries in Central Asia that have an exemplary record in the field of non-proliferation.

The signing of this protocol reflects a strong commitment in support of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, on the part of the nuclear weapon states as well as the countries of Central Asia.

By implementing an action stipulated in the final document of the 2010 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, France confirms its attachment to advancing disarmament through concrete measures. It supports the regional approach to disarmament and the development of nuclear-weapon-free zones.
