Sudan – Death penalty imposed for apostasy (May 15, 2014)

France condemns the decision by the Sudanese courts to impose the death penalty on a young woman for apostasy. Our embassy in Khartoum has been following this trial and was present for the verdict. We will continue to follow the subsequent judicial proceedings with the utmost attention.

This decision, which shocks the conscience, arouses legitimate emotions within the international community.

France calls on the Sudanese authorities to guarantee the freedom of religion and belief, a fundamental principle enshrined in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which has been ratified by Sudan. It also reaffirms its resolute and constant commitment to the fight against the death penalty, everywhere and under all circumstances.

Thailand – Political situation

France is concerned by developments in the situation in Thailand.

We urge the relevant authorities to establish, as swiftly as possible, a clear timetable for the holding of new parliamentary elections.

France reaffirms the importance of finding a solution to the political crisis through dialogue, while ensuring respect for the democratic institutions and principles.
