Situation in Iraq

France is deeply concerned following the takeover by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant of significant parts of the Iraqi territory.

It expresses its solidarity with the Iraqi people and reaffirms its support for the authorities in their fight against terrorism. Every effort must be made to guarantee the safety of the civilian populations and all communities, notably the Christian minorities.

It is more essential than ever to establish inclusive dialogue between all political forces that reject violence in order to ensure the country’s unity and overcome the challenge of terrorism.

Do you have any comment on the situation in Iraq?

Please refer to the statement that we’ve just made with respect to this issue.

Cultural network update – “My Night with Philosophers” at the Institut français in Berlin (June 13 to 14, 2014)

The Institut français in Berlin will host, during the night of June 13 to 14, the first “My Night with Philosophers” to be held in Berlin. This is the 4th edition of this event, which took place at the École normale supérieure in Paris in 2010 and at the Institut français in London in 2012 and 2013.

More than 60 well-known philosophers from all over Europe, including 18 French philosophers will give talks on topics such as “What is art?”, “To be or not to be” and “Sport as an esthetic experience.” These topics, which were selected by the participants, will provide an extensive overview of the latest developments in philosophy in Europe.

The event will feature hourly artistic performances. Films and videos will be shown at the same time. In addition, a library devoted to philosophy will be available throughout the night.

The entire program is available on the website of the Institut français in Berlin: www.institutfrancais.de/berlin

Egypt

Once again, a young Egyptian girl was sexually assaulted on Saturday in Tahrir Square. What’s your response?

This is a despicable act which we condemn.

We express our solidarity with the victim and her family, as well as all women who have suffered the same type of violence. The ambassador for human rights went to Egypt from November 19 to 20, 2013, and met with the associations that provide assistance to women who have been subjected to violence.

France welcomes the commitment of the Egyptian authorities, at the highest level, to ensuring that the perpetrators of this act are identified and brought to justice. We call on the authorities to do everything possible to combat this scourge by implementing the law enacted on June 5 on this issue.
