Turkish Consulate in Mosul:

France condemns the kidnapping of several dozen Turkish citizens from the Turkish Consulate in Mosul.

We call for their immediate release. Everything must be done to ensure they are freed without delay.

At this difficult time, France expresses its solidarity with Turkey.

Do you know if there are any French nationals or other foreigners among the ISIL militants who seized Mosul and Tikrit?

We don’t have any specific information about that.

The international community condemns the advances made by the ISIL in Iraq. But what concrete initiatives are you planning to take to stop this advancement?

The situation in Iraq is very troubling and poses a serious threat to the entire region’s stability. Given the current situation, all Iraqi political forces must work to promote harmony and unity.

Mr. Laurent Fabius has initiated a series of consultations on this issue with his main counterparts.

The primary responsibility for combating the terrorists lies with the Iraqi authorities. France fully supports the Iraqi state in this fight and engages in bilateral cooperation in the area of internal security which includes a component related to the fight against terrorism.

We are also especially mindful about the need to prevent violence against minorities. Yesterday, through diplomatic channels, we called on the Iraqi federal authorities and the Kurdish regional government to take all necessary measures to ensure the protection of the local populations, notably the Christian minorities.

We are also taking action within the multilateral framework. The UN Security Council will meet today in order to examine the situation in the country.

Mali – Attack in Aguelhok (June 11, 2014)

France condemns the attack perpetrated yesterday in Aguelhok, in northern Mali, against the UN mission (MINUSMA). This cowardly act killed 4 Chadian soldiers and injured soldiers belonging to MINUSMA and the armed Malian forces.

In these painful circumstances, we extend our condolences to the victims’ families. France pays tribute to the commitment of the Chadian army, which has paid a very high price in Mali since 2013. We assure the UN of our support and express our solidarity with the authorities of Chad and Mali.

France remains determined to fight, alongside the Malian army, against the armed terrorist groups. It reaffirms its support for the Malian authorities and the UN in their efforts - with the support of the states of the region - to successfully conduct an inclusive dialogue with the non-terrorist armed groups within the framework of the Ouagadougou agreement.

Democratic Republic of Congo – Fighting in the eastern part of the country

France is concerned about the deteriorating security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the wake of the fighting that has been taking place since June 11 in North Kivu.

We call for the immediate cessation of hostilities.

The joint border verification mechanism supported by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been asked to identify the causes of the clashes.

The parties must do everything possible to reduce tensions in order to find a lasting solution to the crisis. France reaffirms its attachment to the full implementation in good faith of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Great Lakes Region, signed in Addis Ababa on February 24, 2013.

Iran

What can you say about the meeting between France and Iran yesterday?

Like his counterparts from the group of Six, notably his American and Russian counterparts, Nicolas de Rivière, Director General for Political and Security Affairs, had a bilateral meeting with his Iranian counterpart in Geneva on June 11.

These discussions were helpful.

The negotiations between the group of Six and Iran will resume next week in Vienna.

A great deal of work remains to be done in order to reach a comprehensive, credible and lasting agreement.
