Georgia – Death of former President Eduard Shevardnadze

We were saddened to learn of the death of Eduard Shevardnadze, former President of Georgia and former Soviet Minister of Foreign Affairs.

We extend our condolences to his family as well as to the Georgian people.

France pays tribute to the memory of this key figure in international relations. Eduard Shevardnadze, who was the architect of the détente between the major powers at the end of the 1980s, played a key role in promoting peace through the resumption of dialogue with the United States and the USSR’s participation in disarmament negotiations.

Central African Republic – Meeting of the International Contact Group (Addis Ababa, July 7, 2014)

France welcomes the new momentum in support of political dialogue in the Central African Republic initiated by the meeting of the International Contact Group in Addis Ababa on July 7.

The forthcoming organization of a forum in Brazzaville, under the auspices of President Sassou Nguesso and in collaboration with the UN, the African Union and the Economic Community of Central African States, should make it possible to bring together all actors involved in the transition process in order to make progress toward peace and national reconciliation.

We continue to support the efforts of the transitional authorities of the Central African Republic aimed at putting the country back on the path toward stability and reconstruction. We notably encourage them to continue their efforts to hold, in the near future, free and transparent elections which will mark the conclusion of the transition period.
