Libya – Parliamentary elections on June 25 – Announcement of results

The announcement of the final results of the parliamentary elections of June 25, 2014, marks an important step in the Libyan political transition.

France pays tribute to the courage of the Libyan people who turned out to vote and the work of the High National Election Commission, which ensured the smooth conduct of these elections. It now calls for the swift formation of the new assembly, so that it can address the challenges currently facing the country.

We also call for the urgent conclusion of a ceasefire agreement in order to put an end to the clashes, notably around the international airport in Tripoli, and for the resumption of political dialogue.

France will continue to support Libya, alongside its international partners and under the auspices of the United Nations.

Nigeria – Terrorist attack against the city of Damboa

France condemns the terrorist attack against the city of Damboa and neighboring villages in northeast Nigeria, during which approximately 40 people were killed and which has reportedly led to the displacement of more than 15,000 people.

We extend our condolences to the victims’ families and assure the Nigerian authorities and people of our solidarity.

The Paris Summit for Security in Nigeria on May 17 and the follow-up meeting on June 12 in London enabled the international community to strengthen its support for the various stakeholders involved in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria, while ensuring respect for human rights. We commend the mobilization and coordination of the states in the region in support of Nigeria’s efforts. France will continue to play its full role in these efforts.
