European Union – Results of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting (Brussels, July 22, 2014)

Mr. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, participated in the EU Foreign Affairs Council yesterday. The meeting provided an opportunity to focus discussions on the situation in the Middle East and in Ukraine:

Middle East: The ministers called on all parties to implement an immediate ceasefire and to allow full and safe humanitarian access to Gaza. They condemned the firing of rockets and the loss of hundreds of lives. They reaffirmed that the Israeli military operation must be proportionate and comply with international humanitarian law. The EU also stated that it stands ready to reactivate the Border Assistance Mission - EUBAM Rafah;

Ukraine: The ministers signaled the need for a transparent investigation into the MH17 disaster and urged Russia to adopt a fully cooperative approach. The member states will tomorrow examine the new list of Russian key figures and entities targeted by sanctions due to their support for the separatists. The Commission and the European External Action Service will also present proposals for possible economic sanctions in four areas (finance, defense, goods with both civil and military applications, and high tech).

Indonesia – Election of Joko Widodo as President of the Republic of Indonesia

France congratulates Joko Widodo on his election as President of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as Jusuf Kalla who was elected Vice President.

Following the parliamentary elections in April, this election reflects the vitality of Indonesian democracy.

The strengthening of our strategic partnership with Indonesia, which is a member of the G20 and a key international player, is one of France’s diplomatic priorities.

Cambodia – Agreement between the Cambodian People's Party and the Cambodia National Rescue Party (July 22, 2014)

France welcomes the agreement reached on July 22 between the government party and the Cambodian opposition.

It’s now up to the Cambodian political actors to work together constructively to implement this agreement and to promote the democratic, economic and social development of the country.

France will remain alongside Cambodia in order to help it strengthen its democratic institutions.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development – Launch of the "Vu(e) de ma fenêtre" (Seen from my window) application (July 23, 2014)

Following the “Carnets diplomatiques" blog, the “Chroniques diplomatiques" Tumblr site and the "Voyage dans le temps" application, the Quai d’Orsay is proposing a new application - "Vu(e) de ma fenêtre" (Seen from my window) which will allow you to take a tour around the offices of the French diplomatic network.

From Buenos Aires to Luanda, Berlin to Kuala Lumpur, working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development means living in contrasting worlds. This application will provide a glimpse, through photos, gifs and time-lapse videos, of what diplomatic network personnel can see behind their windows on a daily basis.

Sit down and take a tour of the offices of those who work for the ministry: http://vuedemafenetre.diplomatie.gouv.fr/

NB: Since most of the photos are high definition, they may take longer to download, depending on your Internet connection speed.
