Iraq – Brutalities in Sinjar and surrounding areas

France is gravely concerned by the situation in the Sinjar area, which ISIS captured on August 3.

Many people belonging to minority communities—particularly Yezidis—have fled and been unable to reach a safe place. The jihadists have already moved forward with killings and forced conversions.

France calls on the Iraqi authorities to do everything it can to provide aid and protection to the hundreds of thousands of residents of the town of Sinjar and surrounding areas.

It wants the international community to mobilize, in view of the dramatic situation of minorities threatened by ISIS in Iraq. That is why it encouraged the Security Council to speak out in this regard yesterday, and it will continue its efforts in all international bodies and with its partners to ensure the protection of these populations.

Afghanistan – Death of an American general (August 5)

We were dismayed to learn of the death of a U.S. general serving in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), who was killed on August 5 by an Afghan soldier near Kabul. In a separate incident that same day in Uruzgan province, seven Afghan soldiers were reportedly killed by a man wearing an Afghan police uniform. France offers its condolences to the victims’ families and wishes those who were injured during these incidents a swift recovery.

France denounces this crime against NATO forces. It applauds the exceptional professionalism, selflessness and courage of military and civilian personnel working in Afghanistan to support the Afghan authorities as they deal with the challenges facing their country.

Azerbaijan - Arif Yunus placed in pre-trial detention (August 5)

France deplores the placement into pre-trial detention of Arif Yunus, the husband of human rights activist Leyla Yunus, who was arrested on July 30. France reiterates its commitment to the respect for human rights and due process.
