Statement by Mr. Laurent Fabius - Iraq – Formation of the government

I welcome the formation of the Iraqi government. It is an important step in the political transition under way since the last parliamentary election.

The challenges ahead are considerable. They demand both that Iraq set out on a path respectful of all those who make up the country and that the international community play an active role alongside it.

France expresses its confidence in President Fouad Massoum and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, and reiterates its full support to them.

European Union – Regional policy – Speech by Harlem Désir at the Cohesion Forum (Brussels, September 8 to 9, 2014)

Mr. Harlem Désir, Minister of State for European Affairs, opened the 6th Cohesion Forum yesterday in Brussels.

The consolidation and stimulation of growth are also dependent on territorial cohesion.

Discussions notably focused on the mobilization of the €352 billion allocated under the cohesion policy for the period 2014-2020 in support of growth and employment in Europe.

Mr. Désir reaffirmed the key role of cohesion policy with respect to innovation, support for the energy transition, and support for small and medium-sized firms. The conclusion of the partnership agreement governing the use of these funds in France on August 8, 2014, will ensure that projects can actually get under way.

Fight against the Ebola epidemic – Meeting between Ms. Annick Girardin and the UN coordinator for Ebola (September 9, 2014)

Ms. Annick Girardin, Minister of State for Development and Francophony, will today meet with Mr. David Nabarro, Senior UN Coordinator for Ebola.

On the eve of her visit to Guinea, Ms. Girardin will take stock of the situation in the countries affected and the response that the international community must provide in terms of expertise, financial resources and equipment.

France is in close contact with its European partners and called for the swift organization, in Brussels, of a high-level mobilization and coordination meeting.

Iraq – Scaling up of our humanitarian assistance

Since Mr. Laurent Fabius’s visit to Baghdad and Erbil on August 10, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development has chartered 3 humanitarian flights to Iraqi Kurdistan.

It has thus been possible to transport more than 58 tons of cargo (tents, blankets, jerry cans, cooking kits, water pumps, water tanks, food supplements) to Erbil.

France is continuing its humanitarian action in Iraq and will charter a plane carrying 18 tons of equipment (1 ton of medicines and 17 tons of basic necessities) in the next few days.

Following the arrival of an initial group of Iraqi refugees in France on August 21, further refugees will arrive in our country this week.

Lebanon – Execution of members of the Lebanese Armed Forces by the terrorist group “Daesh”

The execution of two members of the Lebanese Armed Forces by the terrorist group “Daesh” in Lebanon is a heinous crime. It again reveals the barbaric nature of this organization and strengthens our determination to mobilize the international community against terrorism.

We extend our condolences to the victims’ families.

France reaffirms its support for Lebanon, its institutions and for the Lebanese army, which is the guarantor of the country’s unity.

Chile – Attack in Santiago (September 9, 2014)

France condemns the attack that took place yesterday in a small shopping mall in a subway station in Santiago which left several people injured, some of them very seriously.

It expresses its heartfelt sympathy to the casualties and its wholehearted solidarity with the Chilean authorities and people in these difficult circumstances.
