Iraq - New delivery of humanitarian cargo (November 19, 2014)

Following the deliveries of humanitarian cargo initiated during Mr. Laurent Fabius’s visit to Bagdad and Erbil on August 10, France is continuing to mobilize its efforts in support of Iraq’s displaced populations.

A new delivery from Vendée consisting largely of hygiene products provided by the “Système U” group and blankets funded by the association “Ouest France solidarité” will be received tomorrow in Erbil by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development Crisis Center. Mr. Bruno Retailleau, Senator of Vendée, will hand over this emergency aid to the international branch of the Order of Malta, which will coordinate its distribution.

French humanitarian assistance amounts to €5.2 million so far (more than €1.5 million for the delivery of approximately 100 tons of humanitarian cargo and €3.7 million to support the humanitarian workers in the field). This assistance is being delivered in close cooperation with the regions (notably the Provence-Alpes Côte d’Azur and Vendée regions), companies and corporate foundations (notably Fondation Veolia, Mérieux and Nutriset) as well as with the humanitarian actors.

Agence France-Presse - First African Fact-Checking Awards (November 14, 2014)

We congratulate Ghanaian video journalist Edem Srem and his multitvworld.com team on winning, on November 14, the first African Fact-Checking Awards, created and sponsored by the Agence France-Presse Foundation.

The winning team submitted a video entitled “Trading Ghana's water for gold” which denounces the continued practice of alluvial gold-mining in Ghana. This work reflects the dynamism and incredible professionalism of African journalism.

The award ceremony took place in Nairobi on November 14 at a meeting of the African Media Initiative, the largest association in Africa of media owners, publishers and media industry stakeholders.

Cultural network update - Morocco -My Night with Philosophers” (November 21 to 22, 2014)

The Institut français in Morocco will host “My Night with Philosophers” events at the Rabat National Library on November 21 and at the Institut français in Casablanca on November 22, 2014, notably in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy of the École normale supérieure.

This event will bring together around 40 participants from both countries and elsewhere for conferences, artistic performances and exchanges with the public. Marc Crépon, Ahmed Toufiq and Mohamed Doukkali in Rabat, and Francis Wolff and Ali Benmakhlouf in Casablanca will inaugurate this event with a conference entitled “The Philosopher in the City.”

In keeping with World Philosophy Day celebrated by UNESCO on November 20, “My Night with Philosophers” will help demonstrate renewed interest in this discipline in our two countries. It also aims to stimulate discussion among young people, high school students and college students.
