Sinking of a boat off the coast of Libya (August 5, 2015)

We were shocked to learn of the sinking of a boat off the coast of Libya, which has left many people dead or missing. France extends its condolences to all of the families of the victims of this tragedy.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 2,000 migrants have lost their lives in the Mediterranean according to International Organization for Migration estimates. Yesterday’s tragedy demonstrates more than ever the need for European mobilization in order to provide a strong, coordinated and comprehensive response to a challenge that affects us all. France is playing its full role in this effort.

Japan - 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (August 6-9)

On this 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, France does not forget the victims of that tragedy. We are joining in the peace ceremonies being held in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9.

France reaffirms the priority it accords to a more secure international environment, and to moving forward on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation in keeping with the objectives of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
