Denmark – Meeting between Laurent Fabius and his counterpart (Paris, September 8, 2015)

Laurent Fabius will receive his Danish counterpart, Kristian Jensen, today.

This is the first bilateral meeting between Laurent Fabius and a member of the new Danish government which took office in June. The two ministers will take stock of key international and European issues. They will work on preparing for the Paris Climate Conference.

Mr. Jensen will represent Denmark today at the conference on the victims of ethnic and religious persecution in the Middle East.

Climate – Conference on climate disruption and humanitarian action (September 9, 2015)

Laurent Fabius will bring the conference on climate disruption and humanitarian action to a close on September 9 at 12:00 pm.

This conference, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, Action Against Hunger, Care France and the Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (IRIS), will bring together more than 200 participants. It will provide humanitarian actors with an opportunity to take stock of their action to address the consequences of climate disruption.

At the end of the conference, the NGOs will give Laurent Fabius an open letter which he will pass on to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the UN General Assembly, which is due to take place in New York from September 24. This letter will call on all states that are participating in the Paris Climate Conference to make ambitious and binding climate commitments.

Climate – Meeting on natural disaster alert systems (Sept. 8)

Annick Girardin, minister of state for development and Francophony, is meeting today with representatives from some 30 countries to move forward with the institution of climate disaster alert systems.

This initiative was introduced by Laurent Fabius at the third international conference on disaster risk reduction in Sendai, Japan. It is designed to alert those living in countries most vulnerable to climate disasters as early as possible so that they can seek shelter.

Following an initial gathering on July 6, this second meeting will focus on the implementation of this initiative, including its timetable and funding. It will be presented in detail at the Paris Climate Conference.

Cultural diplomacy – 72nd Venice International Film Festival (Sept. 2-12)

The 72nd Venice International Film Festival, which runs through September 12, is screening 11 French co-productions that have received support through a program called “Aid to Global Cinema.”

Established in 2012 by the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée and the Institut Français, this program promotes global cinematic diversity and new talent through co-productions with France.

The number of films selected this year and their geographic diversity (Middle East, Asia, Europe) reflects the vitality and quality of this program, which has so far lent its support to 169 projects, of which 100 come from emerging countries and countries form the Global South.
