Syria – Visit by Laurent Fabius to New York (December 18, 2015)

Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will participate in meetings on Syria today in New York.

One month after the meeting in Vienna and following the ministerial meeting on December 14 in Paris, he will take part in a further meeting of the International Syria Support Group as well as a United Nations Security Council session.

Fight against the financing of terrorism / United Nations – Adoption of UNSCR 2253 (New York - December 17, 2015)

France welcomes the unanimous adoption by the Security Council of resolution 2253.

This resolution makes it possible to impose sanctions against Daesh terrorists, as was already the case for members of Al Qaeda, and to extend the sanctions regime currently in force.

Following the adoption of resolution 2249 on November 20 which called on the international community to take all necessary measures to combat Daesh, this text strengthens the mechanisms for combating the financing of terrorism and makes it possible to more effectively address the threat posed by Daesh.

The finance ministers of the member states of the Security Council, including Michel Sapin for France, met on this occasion so that these measures can be implemented immediately

Central African Republic / United Nations – Adoption of sanctions at the Security Council (New York - December 17, 2015)

The UN Security Council decided to add Haroun Gaye and Eugène Ngaïkosset to its sanctions list on December 17; their incitement to violence and conduct are disrupting the smooth running of the political process in the Central African Republic.

The sanctions include the freezing of assets and a travel ban. They now affect seven individuals and one entity.

Through these new sanctions, the Security Council sends a strong message to all those who try to undermine the stabilization efforts and use violence to obstruct the election process that the people of the Central African Republic are waiting for.

Burundi / United Nations – Human Rights Council resolution (Geneva - December 17, 2015)

France welcomes the unanimous adoption on December 17 of a Human Rights Council resolution condemning the human rights violations and abuses committed in Burundi by all actors and reaffirming that the perpetrators must be held accountable for their crimes.

We support the deployment of an expert mission on the ground, as provided for in the resolution, to investigate the violations and identify those responsible.

The adoption by consensus of this resolution reflects the international community’s commitment to resolving the crisis in Burundi.

World Arabic Language Day (December 18, 2015)

For World Arabic Language Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development is featuring several documents on its website and social networks:

  • two videos, one in French and one in Arabic, underscoring the benefit, for our diplomats, of mastering Arabic
  • a series of visuals in French and Arabic created for the occasion, tracing the etymology of French terms derived from Arabic
  • the Arabic version of les Carnets Diplomatiques, which will be launched today.

On this day our thoughts go out in particular to Denis Pietton, who passed away recently. This diplomat was deeply knowledgeable about the Middle East and in love with the Arabic language.
