I was extremely saddened to learn of the tragic accident that took place on February 17 during the carnival in Port-au-Prince which killed 16 people and injured many others.

The Haitian people were plunged into grief while celebrating a festival that is very close to their hearts.

France condemns the attack carried out last night in the governorate of Kasserine which killed 4 members of the Tunisian National Guard.

We express our condolences to the victims’ families.

Democratic Republic of Congo – Preparation of the elections (February 12, 2015)

France welcomes the publication by the Independent National Electoral Commission of the overall timeline of the next election cycle, as well as the enactment of the electoral law passed at the end of January.

These texts must now be implemented in accordance with the deadlines that have been set, the Congolese Constitution and the principles of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance of 2007.

We urge the Congolese authorities to update the electoral register and to present a detailed budget for the entire process.

France reaffirms its attachment to an open and calm dialogue between the Congolese political actors, which will be crucial to the credibility and transparency of the forthcoming election process.

Death penalty

With respect to the case relating to Serge Atlaoui, who has been sentenced to death in Indonesia, do you know when the last execution of a French citizen took place abroad?

Since the abolition of the death penalty in our country, we have not been aware of any executions of our nationals, including abroad.
