Climate – Conference entitled “The Arctic as an early warning sentinel of climate change” (Paris, March 17, 2015)

On March 17, Mr. Laurent Fabius will open, together with his Norwegian counterpart, Mr. Borge Brende, the conference entitled “The Arctic as an early warning sentinel of climate change,” hosted by the Monaco Oceanographic Institute’s Maison des Océans in Paris. Leading French and Norwegian scientists and climate negotiators will engage in discussions with the public during the conference.

Prince Albert II of Monaco will also participate in this event.

The conference follows on from the visit by Mr. Fabius together with Mr. Brende in July 2014 to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard (Spitsbergen), an Arctic area that is on average warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. The purpose of the conference is to reaffirm the need to reach an ambitious agreement at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference. It will also emphasize to civil societies and economic actors the urgent need for low-carbon development.

Pakistan – Lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty

France deplores the lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty in Pakistan and expresses its concern at the announcement of forthcoming executions.

We reaffirm our resolute and constant opposition to the death penalty everywhere and under all circumstances.

France encourages Pakistan to re-establish a moratorium on executions, which is the first step toward complete abolition of the death penalty.

Cultural network update - French Language and Francophonie Week (March 14 to 22, 2015)

The 2015 French Language and Francophonie Week will take place from March 14 to 22. This year it will notably celebrate the capacity of the French language to incorporate many words from other languages. It is scheduled to coincide with International Francophonie Day and will provide an opportunity for French-speaking people from around the world to celebrate the diversity of the French language and to express their solidarity.

Like every year, a very large number of events will take place all over the world on the initiative or with the support of the French cultural network: conferences, film festivals, shows, school and academic competitions, debates with business leaders, scientists and NGOs, tourism and gastronomy promotion activities, etc.

On the occasion of International Francophonie Day on March 20, the “My planet is close to my heart” campaign launched by the International Organization of la Francophonie will reaffirm, in the run-up to the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, the importance of mobilizing young French speakers to fight against climate disruption.
