United Arab Emirates / Saudi Arabia – Visit by Laurent Fabius (January 18 to 19, 2016)

Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will visit the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia from January 18 to 19.

In Abu Dhabi, he will take part in the World Future Energy Summit, an international event devoted to renewable energy, notably together with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto. On this occasion, the minister will talk about the follow-up to and the implementation of the Paris agreement.

This visit will also provide an opportunity to give impetus to our bilateral relations. The minister will meet with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan as well as his counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In Dubai, he will meet with the emir, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, as well as with the French business community and U.A.E. decision makers.

On January 19, Laurent Fabius will travel to Riyadh, where he will meet with key Saudi political leaders; on this occasion he will express his wish to continue strengthening our political and economic relations with this key partner of France, within an especially tense context in the Middle East.



European Union – Participation of Harlem Désir in the Foreign Affairs and General Affairs Councils (Brussels - January 18, 2016)

Harlem Désir, minister of state for European affairs, will attend the Foreign Affairs Council, followed by the General Affairs Council, on January 18.

1. The following points will be discussed at the Foreign Affairs Council:

  • Syria: The participants will review the humanitarian situation and the political process. Staffan de Mistura, the UN secretary-general’s special envoy, will moderate that discussion. They will also discuss the fight against Daesh and the issue of Syrian refugees, particularly with a view to the London conference slated for February 4.
  • Iraq: Conversations will deal with the fight against Daesh and the coalition’s action. The ministers will also discuss the need to continue Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s reforms.
  • Ukraine: Discussions will deal with the status of reforms, European Union support, and the implementation of the Minsk process.

A working lunch will feature a discussion on the Middle East with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.

2. The General Affairs Council will discuss the priorities of the new Dutch presidency, which France supports: migration, international security, financial stability and the robustness of the euro area, the promotion of an innovative Europe that creates jobs, the EU’s implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The ministers will also work on preparations for the European Council of February 17 and 18, which will deal with British demands and the response to the migrant crisis.



Slovakia – Meeting between Ms. Girardin and her Slovak counterpart, Mr. Slobodnik (January 15, 2016)

This morning Annick Girardin, minister of state for development and Francophonie, welcomed Igor Slobodnik, state secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic.

They reviewed the European development policy a few months ahead of the Slovak EU presidency in the second half of 2016.

Ms. Girardin also discussed with her counterpart the role of youth in development policies.



Syria / United Nations – Meeting of the Security Council on the humanitarian situation (January 15, 2016)

The UN Security Council will meet this afternoon in New York at our request. This emergency public meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss the situation of the civilian populations besieged in Syria.

We solemnly call for the immediate and effective lifting of all sieges, for continuous and unrestricted humanitarian access to all populations in need, and for an end to the attacks against civilians.
