Climate / European Union – Speech delivered by Laurent Fabius at the European Parliament (Strasbourg - January 20, 2016)

Laurent Fabius, COP21 President, will deliver a speech this afternoon during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, at the invitation of European Parliament President Martin Schulz.

On this occasion, he will pay tribute to the EU’s vital contribution to the success of the Paris climate agreement and will call on Europeans to continue their efforts to ensure that it is ratified as swiftly as possible.

In the context of the implementation of the agreement, Laurent Fabius will notably urge MEPs to reform the EU emissions trading system directive and to mobilize their efforts to finance the fight against climate disruption. The EU must swiftly translate its commitments into action in order to achieve the ambitious goal of reducing emissions by 40% by 2030 and further encourage companies to invest in low-carbon technologies.

Libya – Formation of a national unity government (January 19, 2016)

France welcomes the announcement of the formation of a Libyan national unity government led by Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj.

As Laurent Fabius reiterated yesterday, “the situation in Libya must be stabilized and it is absolutely essential to ensure the formation of a unity government supported by everyone that is of course able to re-establish the essential functions of the Libyan state, fully ensure its security in particular and check Daesh’s advance.”

In view of the urgency of the situation, France calls on the Libyan Parliament to convene as swiftly as possible in order to express its confidence in the new government.
