India ⁄ Fire in Kerala state – Reminder of Jean-Marc Ayraultís statement (April 10, 2016)

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the authorities and people of India following the tragic fire that took place in Kerala state.

My thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we extend every encouragement to the injured.

Yemen – Ceasefire (April 10, 2016)

France welcomes the entry into force of a ceasefire in Yemen on April 10, which is an essential first step ahead of the peace negotiations scheduled to start in Kuwait on April 18.

The populations must be able to receive the humanitarian assistance they need.

We call on all Yemeni parties to engage in the talks in a constructive manner, without preconditions; we lend our full support to the special envoy of the UN secretary-general in conducting these negotiations.

Iraq – Humanitarian situation in Falluja

France is concerned about the humanitarian situation in Falluja, where several tens of thousands of civilians are trapped in the city being held by Daesh. There are reports of food shortages and a lack of medicines, while humanitarian actors do not have access to the city.

We commend the Iraqi governmentís decision to establish humanitarian corridors and call on the Iraqi authorities to do everything possible to protect civilians and allow them to receive the humanitarian assistance that they need.

France stands alongside Iraq in the fight against the barbarity being inflicted by Daesh against all Iraqi people.

Ukraine – Situation in the Donbass

France is extremely concerned by the notable increase in violations of the ceasefire in Ukraine over the last few days, as well as by the increased instances of obstruction facing the OSCE observation mission. The recent incidents targeted at the observers near the line of contact are unacceptable.

We call on all parties to respect the ceasefire and to guarantee the OSCE access throughout its area of operations, as they pledged to do so.

The only way to stabilize the situation is through the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements.

ECOWAS ⁄ Presidency of the Commission – Appointment of Marcel Alain De Souza (April 8, 2016)

France welcomes the appointment of Marcel Alain De Souza, former Minister for Development, Economic Analysis and Forecast of Benin, as president of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States.

It wishes him every success in the high office to which he has been elected.

We congratulate the outgoing president, Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo, on the work he has carried out since 2012 in support of integration and peace in West Africa, notably in Mali, Guinea-Bissau and Burkina Faso.
