Ukraine – Ministerial meeting in the Normandy format in Berlin (May 11, 2016)

Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will visit Berlin on Wednesday, May 11, to meet with his German, Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in the Normandy format to take stock of progress toward implementing the Minsk agreements.

In accordance with the priorities identified during the most recent meeting of the ministers in this format on March 3, 2016, in Paris, the participants will review measures to consolidate the ceasefire following the Easter truce which has been in force since May 1, and will discuss ways to ensure the security of local elections in eastern Ukraine. The discussions will also focus on improving the humanitarian and economic situation in eastern Ukraine.

Culture / Cinema – Cannes Film Festival (May 10, 2016)

The Cannes International Film Festival, of which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development is a longstanding partner, opens today. This is a major event, both from an artistic perspective as well in terms of the economy of the film industry and is a powerful tool for promoting and enhancing the attractiveness of France.

André Vallini, Minister of State for Development and Francophonie, will visit Cannes on May 13, 2016, to promote our efforts in support of film diversity and French language and culture. He will notably meet with filmmakers involved in the "La Fabrique des Cinémas du monde" ("The Making of World Cinema") program, developed by the Institut franšais to support the emergence of talented young people from countries in the South and sponsored this year by Chinese film director Jia Zhang-ke.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development and the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (National Center for Cinema and the Moving Image) also lend support - through the World Cinema Support Fund - to co-productions with partner countries and help to promote cultural diversity. Twelve films supported by this program have been selected for the 2016 festival; five of them have been entered in the official competition.

Our diplomatic and cultural network is also mobilizing its efforts to promote the festival and the expertise of the French film industry. Various events are taking place, including for example in Bucharest, Buenos Aires and Cuba.
