Germany / Culture – Meeting between Jean-Marc Ayrault and Olaf Scholz (Paris - June 8, 2016)

Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will receive Olaf Scholz, First Mayor of Hamburg and Special Representative for French-German Cultural Relations, today. This role enables the German Länder - within the framework of their responsibilities for culture and education - to play an active role in cultural, educational and youth cooperation between France and Germany.

This meeting took place during the 6th Conference of School Superintendents and Ministers of Education of the Länder which is taking place in Paris from June 7 to 8 and is notably dedicated to the learning of French and German. Mr. Ayrault and Mr. Scholz will discuss the results of this conference and the strengthening of French-German relations in the educational and cultural spheres.

Did you respond or do have any response to the reports of atrocities and human rights violations committed by the [Iraqi pro-government] militia in the campaign to liberate cities such as Falluja and other cities in Iraq?

France is concerned about the situation of the besieged civilian populations in Falluja who are in effect being held hostage by Daesh which is deliberately targeting civilians trying to flee the city.

We have taken note of the statements issued by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on June 7.

We condemn all human rights violations and call on all parties to comply fully with international humanitarian law.
