Myanmar / Burma – Visit by Jean-Marc Ayrault (June 17-19, 2016)

Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will visit Burma from June 17 to 19.

This is the first official French visit since the formation of the government led by the National League for Democracy. Jean-Marc Ayrault will thereby express France's support for Burma in this new phase of the democratic process and strengthen our cooperation in all areas.

Jean-Marc Ayrault will meet with Aung San Suu Kyi, who visited France in 2012 and 2014 at our invitation.

He will hold discussions with Htin Kyaw, President of Burma, Mahn Win Khaing Than, Speaker of Parliament, Pe Zin Tun, Minister for Electric Power and Energy, as well as with Phyo Min Thein, Chief Minister of the Yangon Region. He will also meet with representatives of Burmese civil society.

Mr. Ayrault will visit the Joseph Kessel School, the Institut français in Yangon and the Myanmar Journalism Institute, supported through French cooperation and in particular by CFI, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development's media cooperation agency. He will meet with the French community, and representatives of French firms and NGOs operating in Burma.

Syria / Bombing of the Omar Bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Aleppo (June 15, 2016) – Statement by Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development

I utterly condemn the bombing by the Syrian regime and its supporters of a hospital in Aleppo supported by Médecins du Monde. France, which actively supported the adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2286 on May 3, 2016, on the protection of healthcare workers, will continue to condemn such attacks and demand that those responsible be brought to justice.

This cowardly and heinous act, which is part of a deliberate and continuous policy to attack health care workers and medical facilities in Syria, constitutes a further violation of international humanitarian law.

France calls for respect for the cessation of hostilities and unrestricted humanitarian access in order to allow the negotiations to resume.

Syria / United Nations / Human Rights – Report by the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria at the Human Rights Council (June 16, 2016)

France has taken note of the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria's devastating report on Daesh's crimes against the Yezidi population. The report illustrates the terrorist group's systematic barbarity.

The international commission characterizes the atrocities committed by Daesh as crimes against humanity and genocide.

France, which hosted a conference in Paris on September 8 of last year on the protection of victims of ethnic and religious violence in the Middle East, is fully committed to fighting impunity.

Economic diplomacy – France joins the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (June 16, 2016)

France officially joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) today, depositing its instrument of ratification of the agreement with the Chinese authorities. After a vote by the French Parliament on a law to this effect, the deposit of the ratification instrument marks the final stage in our membership process.

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank aims to support infrastructure development in Asia and remedy the lack of investment in this sector, while taking environmental concerns into account.

A founding member, France was from the outset part of the negotiations leading to the development of its bylaws. Together with our European partners, we have made sure these bylaws incorporate the highest social and environmental standards used by multilateral banks. France attributes special importance to their implementation in project selection and management.

Culture / Visegrad Group – "Night of Philosophy" (Prague - June 16-17, 2016)

During the Czech presidency of the Visegrad Group, which includes Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the first "Night of Philosophy France – Visegrad" will be held in Prague, with support from the Institut Français in Paris. The event will run through the evening and into the wee hours.

Fifty-five philosophers from France and the Visegrad countries will discuss the topic of "Images, Sciences and Politics."

Exhibits, film screenings, readings, concerts and discussions will be open to the public.

Press – "Media in the Mediterranean" conferences hosted by the Villa Méditerranée (Marseille - June 16-17, 2016)

The Villa Méditerranée, a member of the AViteM public interest group which brings together the government and local authorities, will host the "Journées de la presse en Méditerranée" from June 16 to 17.

This event will provide an opportunity for media professionals to exchange views with the public, researchers, artists, and government representatives. Work will notably focus on the media coverage of migration, the work and training of journalists as well as on digital technology.

The work of the "Côte à Côte" [Side by side] project, which features a monthly program that is broadcast on SouriaLi, the independent Syrian radio station, as well on French radio stations, will be presented during this event.
