Egypt – Conversation between Jean-Marc Ayrault and his counterpart, Sameh Choukri (August 3, 2016)

Jean-Marc Ayrault spoke by phone with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Choukri, on August 1.

The minister thanked him for the cooperation between Egyptian and French personnel involved in the investigation of the crash of Egypt Air flight MS804. France is offering assistance through the BEA (its aviation accident investigation bureau) and the IRCGN (Criminal Research Institute of the National Gendarmerie) in the technical investigation and identification of victims.

Mr. Ayrault reiterated how difficult it is for the families, as they wait for answers on the return of the victims' remains and personnel belongings, as well as the causes of the crash. In that connection, he expressed the expectations of the victims' families with respect to the Egyptian investigation committee in charge of the case, and to Egyptair.

They also discussed regional issues, particularly the Libyan crisis and the Middle East peace process. The two ministers underscored the need for France and Egypt to continue working together closely on these subjects.

Yemen – Attacks (August 2, 2016)

France condemns the attacks of August 2 on a military base in al-Habilayn (Lahej province), that took the lives of six soldiers and injured some 10 people.

We offer our condolences to the victims'families.

We reiterate our support for the Yemeni people and authorities in the fight against terrorism.

Only a political solution can lead to the long-term restoration of stability. France reaffirms its support for the efforts by the UN special envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmad.

Iran – Executions (August 3, 2016)

France—which opposes the death penalty everywhere and in all circumstances—condemns the execution of 20 people in Iran.

We support the universal abolition of the death penalty—an unjust, inhuman, and ineffective punishment—and urge all nations who still have it to establish a moratorium.

Egypt – Death of Ahmad Zewail (August 2, 2016)

France pays tribute to the memory of the Egyptian-American scientist and 1999 Nobel Prize laureate for Chemistry, Ahmad Zewail, who died on August 2.

We offer our condolences to his family and loved ones.

During his extraordinary career, he helped expand the horizons of chemistry, biology, and pharmacology.

Turkey – EU

On Wednesday, Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern called on the EU to end accession talks with Turkey. What's your position on this?

Jean-Marc Ayrault addressed this topic during the Foreign Affairs Council of July 18 and noted that these talks are aimed at "helping Turkish democrats, those who want their country to modernize and adopt international standards of democracy."

I refer you to his statements.
