Italy / Earthquake – Statement issued by Jean-Marc Ayrault (August 24, 2016)

I was extremely shocked to learn of the earthquake that struck the region of Umbria in central Italy last night, resulting in casualties and significant damage to property.

I extend my deepest condolences to the victims' families and I wish the injured a speedy recovery.

Our embassy is mobilized to provide our compatriots in Italy with any support they may require. It stands ready to provide the Italian authorities with any assistance they may request.

I would like to express France's solidarity with the Italian authorities and people. We stand shoulder to shoulder with Italy at this difficult time.

North Korea – Firing of a ballistic missile (August 24, 2016)

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile from a submarine which reportedly travelled 500 km before entering Japan's air defense identification zone.

France condemns this latest irresponsible provocation, which notably violates UNSR 2270 of March 2, 2016. It constitutes a threat to peace and regional and international security.

France calls for the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

We are in close contact with our partners—notably Japan and South Korea—regarding this issue.
